SITHFAB002 (RSA) Provide responsible service of alcohol

NSW Approved Training Provider - RSA/RCG 2022-2023

RSA is a mandatory course that you must undertake if you want to work in any venue in NSW where alcohol is sold or supplied.

Depending on your duties you may also need Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) training. Gaming machines are allowed in registered clubs and hotels and venue staff have additional responsibilities when operating gaming machines.

Austrain Academy is an approved provider of NSW RSA & RCG training on behalf of Liquor and Gaming NSW.

This course is a 6½ hour face to face classroom course that will prepare you for work in the hospitality industry. A NSW competency card can be obtained on successful completion and is valid for 5 years. The course fee includes the cost of the competency card.

You will also be issued with a National RSA Statement of Attainment (SITHFAB002), which may allow you to work in other states in Australia, depending on each state's requirements.

You must bring one of the following types of Photo ID to your course:

  • a driver or rider licence or permit issued by an Australian State or Territory or any foreign country
  • Australian or other passport
  • NSW photo card
  • proof of age card issued by a public authority of the Commonwealth or of another State or Territory for the purpose of attesting to a person's identity and age
  • Keypass (over-18) identity card issued by Australia Post

This course is for students new to the liquor industry or returning to a job requiring RSA competency after five years. If you already have an RSA and/or RCG Photo Competency Card that is not more than 28 days expired, you do not need to complete this course. (If you choose to complete the course, another Interim Certificate cannot be provided.) You can now renew your photo competency card for five years by completing online refresher training with Liquor & Gaming NSW. If your card is expiring soon, you will be notified by email and SMS about how to renew and complete the online refresher training.

AMR & Bridging Course:

Victorian, ACT or Northern Territory residents who hold a current RSA in their home state and are seeking to temporarily work in NSW, can now do so under the new automatic mutual recognition agreement (AMR). If they move their principal place of residence or work to NSW, they will need to apply under the existing mutual recognition pathway (see information below). Applicants from SA, TAS, QLD or WA seeking to work in NSW either temporarily or permanently, must apply under the existing mutual recognition agreement. These states have yet to adopt the automatic mutual recognition agreement.

Mutual recognition pathway (Bridging Course) Offered by Liquor & Gaming NSW is a 90 minute online Bridging course which provides interstate workers with the information and training they need to responsibly sell, serve and supply liquor in NSW.

To be eligible to take the course, interstate workers must have:

  • a national RSA statement of attainment from Queensland, Northern Territory, South Australia, Western Australia or Tasmania issued within the last five years, or
  • an RSA certificate or refresher certificate from Victoria issued within the last three years
  • an RSA certificate or refresher certification or national RSA statement of attainment from Australian Capital Territory issued within the last three years

For more information about workers covered under AMR and eligibility of interstate RSA holders to work in NSW visit the Making it easier for registered professionals to work interstate page and the Liquor & Gaming NSW Responsible Service of Alcohol web pages.

Additionally, if you wish to become a licensee, approved manager or club secretary in NSW you may only need to complete the Licensee training.

Why Should I Attend?

In NSW this RSA Course is a minimum requirement for all staff involved in the sale, supply service or promotion of alcohol. It is vital that all staff understand the requirements of the Liquor Act & Regulations in order to protect themselves and their employers from liability.

RSA training applies to:

  • club secretaries and club directors (if they serve alcohol)
  • licensees and managers
  • service staff
  • RSA marshals
  • crowd controllers
  • security staff
  • promotional staff
  • volunteers

For further information about RSA requirements in States and Territories other than NSW please contact the relevant state authority.

Note - People who would like to work in senior roles that have greater responsibilities under the liquor laws will be required to complete additional training. Licensee training is a requirement for most licensees, approved managers and club secretaries.

How soon can I work after completing the course?

Once you have successfully completed and paid for your course it will take between 24 and 48 hours for you to receive your 'interim certificate'. This certificate will enable you to work serving or supplying alcohol for 90 days. During this time you must apply for your Competency Card or you won’t be able to work after the 90 days are expired.

Applying for the Competency Card

You can apply for the Liquor and Gaming NSW Photo Competency Card at participating Service NSW outlets when you present your Interim Certificate and 100 points of identification.

You can get the digital version of the card as soon as you visit Service NSW to have your photo taken and proof-of-identity check. Visit and search 'Get started with digital licences' to learn more about the digital NSW competency card.

The RSA course is a competency based 6.5 hour program (includes breaks) with a Statement of Attainment and an Interim Certificate issued on successful completion of the course.
